Position: Justice Worker
Starting Range: $24.09 - $26.56 (Pending Education & Experience)
Location: 7 Shingwauk Street, Administration Building
Report to: Governance Specialist

Garden River First Nation (GRFN) is seeking a Justice Worker to be responsible to engage the community to identify gaps in justice services, and to develop and implement strategies that ensure the best options to remedy behavior when individuals become involved with the judicial system. The position will also provide support and advocacy to individuals involved in crime through Garden River First Nation's Justice Program, Gweyek Ji-Bimoseng. The Justice Worker will complete necessary court documents; liaise with court workers, lawyers, judges, district attorneys, and
police; ensure services are provided in a culturally sensitive manner.

DUTIES
- Consult with community to understand gaps in justice services available to community; develop and implement strategies to address issues; provide advocacy and support to individuals involved in the criminal court system by:
- Consulting with community, youth, elders, leadership, service providers, police to identify gaps in justice services,
- Developing and implementing strategies to address gaps in service, including diversion strategies while recognizing unique culture, heritage and traditions of the community;
- Liaising with judicial system, police, individual and families to explain the role of the Justice worker, mitigate risk, explore diversion strategies when necessary,
- Using a variety of teaching techniques including modeling, observing, questioning, demonstrating, and reinforcing to promote healthy lifestyles;
- Teaching, encouraging and assisting clients to practice self-help skills, refer to appropriate services both internal and external to the community;
- Planning and carrying out experiences which facilitate an understanding of our native culture, language and value system in relation to healthy lifestyles;
- Working with other professionals in developing specific programs/resources as appropriate; ensuring services are respectful of individuals' rights and community practices
- Completing administrative tasks such as filing, monthly and activity report submissions, developing program descriptions, workplans and, budgeting/expense claims
- Performing other duties as may be required and assigned

Required Skills:
- Required Post-Secondary Diploma in Community Services or an equivalent amount of education/experience as determined by GRFN
- Required minimum six-months related experience
- Knowledge and interest in issues affecting Indigenous people
- Ability to deal effectively with difficult clients, conflicting and difficult situations
- Understanding and knowledge of the Criminal system and the related Acts
- Ability to work flexible hours including after hours, weekends and travel time, if necessary
- Flexibility required to keep pace with an ever-changing environment
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and knowledge to the First Nation cultural values and traditions
- Must undergo a criminal record check prior to employment (At Applicant Expense)
