Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site - Parks Canada
Sault Ste. Marie (Ontario)
Term position from May to August 2025
$27.47 to $29.85 per hour

Nestled beneath the International Bridge in downtown Sault Ste. Marie, the Sault Ste. Marie Canal was built to bypass the rapids on the St. Marys River. Opened in 1895, the canal completed an all-Canadian waterway featuring the longest lock in the world and the first to operate using electricity.

Known as Baawaating, this region holds profound significance as home and sacred gathering place for Indigenous peoples. The dedicated Visitor Experience team at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal strives to convey the narratives of innovation and historical significance to all those who engage with this culturally rich site.

Duties
- Greet and interact with visitors to support a quality experience, providing information about the activities at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal and its history
- Facilitate sales of goods and services
- Address and resolve visitor inquires, concerns and complaints
- Routine cleaning of facilities, emptying of garbage and recycling bins, dusting, sweeping, vacuuming and mopping
- Collect revenue using a point-of-sale system, interact machine and cash payments
- Team lead for Visitor Centre which includes managing gift shop operations and inventory
- Order and receive inventory and ensure product is fully stocked throughout the operating season

Required Skills:
EDUCATION
- A secondary school diploma or acceptable combination of education, training and experience in a field related to the position

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
- Experience in interacting with the public in a reception/orientation capacity
- Experience in general maintenance of facilities
- Experience with Point-of-Sale (POS) systems, Interact and cash handling
- Experience working within a team environment
- Experience in inventory collection and recording

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS
- Bilingualism
- Experience in proper bike maintenance
- Experience is cross selling and/or upselling

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Make moderate physical effort to sit and stand for prolonged periods
- Be exposed to variable weather conditions
- Occasionally demonstrate tasks to others
- Work shift-work, weekends, statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays
. Wear a Parks Canada uniform as per the uniform policy and/or dress in period costume as per Parks Canada requirement-
Requirements:
- Obtain and maintain Reliability Status security clearance
- Possession and maintenance of a valid Class G driver's license
