Visitor Services Attendant (Anticipatory)
Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site of Canada - Parks Canada
St.Joseph Island (Ontario)
4 month temporary position from May to August 2025
$27.47 to $29.85 per hour

Join a small but dedicated Parks Canada team at Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site! As a Visitor Services Attendant, you will help provide a memorable experience to visitors seeking to connect with the history of the region.

Duties include
- Greet and orient visitors, respond to questions and provide information about Fort St. Joseph
- Process admission fees and gift shop sales using a point-of-sale system
- Address and resolve visitor concerns and complaints
- Perform general cleaning of the facility, including mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, maintaining restrooms, and monitoring cleaning supplies
- Routine maintenance and coordination with the maintenance team to complete mowing of the grounds, trails, and roadways to enhance visitor experience. Mowing includes the use of push mower, zero-turn riding lawn mower and string trimmer
- Support Visitor Experience team with interpretive programs and activities as required

Required Skills:
EDUCATION
- A secondary school diploma or acceptable combination of education, training and experience in a field related to the position.

Degree equivalency
EXPERIENCE
- Experience interacting with the public in a customer service capacity
- Experience in grounds maintenance and cleaning of facilities
- Experience with Point of Sale systems and cash handling
- Experience working cooperatively in a small team environment

Bilingual - Imperative

KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of Parks Canada and the Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures/processes in the workplace

- Ability to communicate clearly and creatively to all types of visitors, in order to expand awareness and appreciation of Fort St. Joseph

Requirements:
- Knowledge of local Indigenous cultures, practices, and/or languages
- Knowledge of flora and fauna local to northern Ontario and the Great Lakes
- Experience with historic weapons, including flintlock muskets

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Have reliable transportation to Fort St. Joseph for regular weekly hours Wednesday through Sunday (transportation is not provided)
- Work weekends, and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required
- Wear a Parks Canada uniform as per the uniform policy
- May be required to dress in period costume
- Work and/or travel in varied terrain and weather conditions
- Make moderate physical effort to stand/walk/hike/sit for prolonged periods of time and/or to clean facilities/grounds
- Be in an environment where historic weapons are present
- Must successfully complete Parks Canada training in the safe handling of historic weapons (flintlock muskets)
- May be required to safely handle historic weapons and artifacts after completion of Parks Canada training

- Obtain and maintain Reliability Status security clearance
- Possession and maintenance of a valid Class G driver's license
