One Year Contract
Batchewana First Nation Range: $23.54- $26.26
Who We Are
The Ojibways of Batchewana First Nation (BFN) are a progressive and vibrant Indigenous community situated on the north-eastern
shore of Lake Superior adjacent to the City of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. The First Nation Is comprised of four land bases: Rankin, Goulais
Bay, Obadjiwon, and Whitefish Island.
Batchewana First Nation has the charm of small-town life with access to urban areas and proximity to the international bridge. As part
of the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians and signatories to the Robinson Huron Treaty, Batchewana First Nation assert their
sovereignty, jurisdiction, and expressions of nationhood through a multitude of approaches each and everyday.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Membership and Licensing Administrator, the Membership and Licensing Assistant is responsible for providing
administrative services within established frameworks to support applicants, membership and the department's obligations. The
incumbent ensures that the principles and procedures for attaining status and other benefits are followed and interacts with applicants
to usher and support them through the process.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Assists in registering various reportable events including births, deaths, marriages, process of status cards and provide application forms for Band registry. Accomplishes this through duties such as communicating with members and relaying information to Indigenous Services Canada.
- Maintains processes and systems for records management in order to capture, document and provide access to information; this includes duties such as maintaining databases on Band Members in line with eligibility criteria and other parameters established by Membership and BFN leadership.
- Supports membership votes including General Elections, By-Elections, or Plebiscite / Referendums by performing duties such as compiling a list of Electoral Officers to send out requests for bids and assisting the Electoral/Returning Officer including handing out candidate packages, providing mailing lists and accepting withdrawals.
- Assists in annual Treaty Pay through duties such as organizing and attending events, providing clarification and information regarding history and affirming information regarding membership.
- Assists with transfer request process which includes posting for expression of concerns within set time frames, preparing documents for Council approval and following up with other First Nations and ISC regarding registry in order to ensure that individuals are registered with ISC and that the process is followed.
- Assist Wills and Estates administration by performing duties that include arranging information sessions, counselling members on the importance of Wills in relation to residency, supporting family members with Estate queries providing referrals and filing applications or approvals within ISC jurisdiction.
- Maintains a network of contacts to access information in relation to job duties by performing duties such as, attending conferences/participating in workshops, developing relationships with external stakeholders and Agency representatives and keeping abreast of information that may impact internal procedures.
- Maintains systems and records including a database for BFN's reserve lands government permits such as those required for membership business, lotteries, fundraisers, liquor sales.
- Other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
- Post secondary diploma, in a discipline such as Office Administration or related area of study
- 1-3 years of related work experience
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
- Understanding of BFN Community dynamics
- Familiarity with Indian Act
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Excellent communications skills and the ability to work with community people
- Able to interact with sensitivity and empathy for individual circumstances
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Highly organized with attention to detail
