The Ojibways of Batchewana First Nation (BFN) are a progressive and vibrant Indigenous community situated on the northeastern shore of Lake Superior adjacent to the City of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. The First Nation Is comprised of four land bases: Rankin, Goulais Bay, Obadjiwon, and Whitefish Island.
Batchewana First Nation has the charm of small-town life with access to urban areas and proximity to the international bridge. As part of the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians and signatories to the Robinson Huron Treaty, Batchewana First Nation assert their sovereignty, jurisdiction, and expressions of nationhood through a multitude of approaches each and everyday.
Position Summary
The Batchewana Natural Resources Department (BNR) Mining and Aggregate Supervisor will be responsible for the management and operations of the BFN's Mining and Aggregate Program. The BFN Mining and Aggregate Program initiative is to insure BFN manages our resources with in BFN's Original Reserve in a matter that reflects are responsibilities as Anishinaabe.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Supervises and manage all BFN and BNR's mining and aggregate resources that are located within BFN's Original Reserve to support BNR's management initiatives.
- Supervises, issue and monitor of all BNR mining and aggregate permits to ensure regulation complicity are followed as identified in the BNR's Natural Resources Strategy Management Plan.
- To understand, promote, encourage and support the development of sustainable, market-based and value-added resource development ventures based on the aggregate and mining initiatives
- Is responsible for formulating an operational policy, procedures, and standards for management of aggregate and mining projects.
- Collect and analyze resource data with a view to developing and monitoring resource management policies and practices
- Work in partnership other First Nations, First Nation Organizations, non-First Nation agencies and communities and the federal and provincial governments
- Prepare technical reports to BFN Chief and Council and BNR Manager, Research and review mining companies, management plans and policies. Research and review federal and provincial legislation and regulations in relation to commercial harvest of minerals
- Work with consultants, to negotiate and prepare agreements, review documents, MOU's and Environmental reports to provide professional support to maximize BFN's ability to operate in the Mining and Aggregate field.
- Act as first contact for (Liaison) represent of BFN, day to day work, with industry, government ect.
- In coordination with the Natural Resources Manager to monitor the program budget and review financial statement s on a quarterly basis to maintain a high level of financial and program management accountability
- Perform other duties as required

Required Skills:
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
- A relevant post secondary degree or diploma in Natural Resources Management or more then 5 years of work experience in Natural Resources Management industry.
- Working experience with technical functions for the Mining and Aggregate Guidelines
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Will be knowledgeable of the History of Batchewana First Nations, Traditional Knowledge, Treaties, First Nation rights, and resources management practices.
- Will be knowledgeable about the culture and the significant characteristic of the social
structure and relevant natural resource needs of Batchewana First Nations
- Will be thoroughly familiar with the relevant Batchewana First Nation, federal and provincial legislations, regulations and/or guidelines that are relevant to First Nations
- Work effectively with staff of other programs/agencies both native and non-native
- Ability to work in a team environment and with minimal supervision
- In coordination with the Natural Resources Manager to monitor the program budget and review financial statement s on a quarterly basis to maintain a high level of financial and program management accountability
- Working knowledge of computer software applications, Microsoft Work, Excel, spreadsheets, electronic mail, power point, GIS programs, etc.
- Ability to write funding proposals and complete reports, motor program budget and work plans.
