Who We Are
The Ojibways of Batchewana First Nation (BFN) are a progressive and vibrant Indigenous community situated on the north-eastern shore of Lake Superior adjacent to the City of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. The First Nation Is comprised of four land bases: Rankin, Goulais Bay, Obadjiwon, and Whitefish Island.
Batchewana First Nation has the charm of small-town life with access to urban areas and proximity to the international bridge. As part of the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians and signatories to the Robinson Huron Treaty, Batchewana First Nation assert their sovereignty, jurisdiction, and expressions of nationhood through a multitude of approaches each and everyday.

Summary of Position
The Crisis Worker provides help, services and support to clients that are at-risk. The work ranges from intake through care planning through release or discharge. The Crisis Worker works in collaboration with other Crisis Team members to stabilize and manage any crisis situation.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
Participates in the development of the Shelter's purpose, goals and objectives. Accomplishes this through activities that include continual evaluation of services and observation of trends and needs in the community to ensure opportunities toward the clients' quality world are available.
Conducts residential services such as counselling, referrals, advocacy and group sessions based on an understanding of intergenerational trauma and colonial violence in order to help clients connect and make change in their lives.
Considers traditional healing practices such as offering smudge and passing semaa, as part of client care, counselling and support in order to foster spiritual well-being.
Responds to the needs of the client by providing counselling, advocacy, referrals, and support
Ensures safety of the clients through activities such as safety planning and performing physical security checks and monitoring security cameras.
Develops, delivers and evaluates educational group and individual sessions in order to build healthy coping mechanisms and provide an opportunity to reflect and make healthier choices.

Batchewana First Nation is Governed by an elected Chief and Council and operates under a Senior Management team comprised of Program Directors and the Chief Executive Officer. Qualifications & Experience
Post-secondary degree in social work field or related field, or relevant education and two years' work social service experience, preferably frontline with families

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of various forms of domestic violence and impacts on women/families
Able to practice from a trauma informed approach
Knowledge of women's issues such as human trafficking, common health issues, etc.
Understanding of cultural and ethnic teachings related to gender
Awareness of men's issues and their role in the family
Able to maintain confidentiality especially in highly sensitive situations
Knowledge of various community service providers to effectively service clients.
Proficient verbal and written communication skills. Proficient advocacy skills an asset. Working environment requires an ability to prioritize needs of clients when responding due to unexpected emergencies
Possesses consistency and the ability to follow guidelines for documentation, such as those related to daily shift end reports, client notes and files.
Experience with life skills such as cooking and cleaning.
Experience or willingness to learn to implement and deliver programming related to
clients' needs on a one
-to-one basis or in a group setting
Knowledgeable about the culture and the significant characteristics of the social structure and relevant human services needs of Batchewana First Nation.
Knowledgeable of the range of both contemporary and traditional methods of intervention, support and healing that are effective in promoting community, family and individual well-being.
