Positions: Assistant Coach (10-18 hrs/week)

Sault Surge Aquatic Team (SSAT) is a non-profit, competitive club in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. SSAT provides professional swim instruction, training and coaching for competitive swimmers from ages 7 to 17 and beyond. The operations of the Club are overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors elected annually by the membership and is governed according to the Club's by-laws.
SSAT is fortunate to have access to city run pool facilities. The club has a strong membership base from Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding areas of approximately 80-100 swimmers. Our mission is to promote the sport of competitive and developmental swimming in our community and deliver quality swim programming to all of our members. SSAT is looking for a part-time Assistant Coach with a start date in May 2023 to train with current coaching staff for the remainder of the 2022-23 season, and take on a leadership role in our intermediate & senior swimmers in the 2023-24 season and beyond. SSAT is also looking for Junior Coach candidates to support our introductory swim programs with a potential pathway to develop into an Assistant Coach.

Assistant Coach
Job Description
The Assistant Coach of the Club is responsible for supporting the Head Coach in their duties to organize and implement swim programs and methods necessary for the training, focus and motivation of the swimmers. The Assistant Coach must be capable of supporting a high caliber program for those swimmers pursuing qualifying times for provincial, and national competitions while at the same time coaching high quality developmental swimming programs to age group and novice swimmers. The successful candidate will promote and maintain healthy and positive relationships with all members of the club, have excellent organizational and communication skills, combined with the ability to foster a positive team atmosphere.

Primary Duties
- Support the swimming and training programs implemented by the Head Coach for competitive and novice swimmers in a safe and positive environment
- Engage with a team of assistant and development coaches in a positive professional way to establish a cohesive team and enjoyable season
- Coach a high quality technical program for intermediate and senior swimmers
- Coach a learn to swim novice program which aligns with the competitive swim program
- Regular communication with swimmers including end of season progress reports
- Commitment to undertake professional self-development to advance coaching knowledge
- Experience operating physical and/or dryland fitness, as well as mental training would be an asset
- Experience following schedules for multiple groups for competitive and novice swim programs
- Assist the Head Coach with their administrative duties including managing the meet calendar, editing meet entries, preparation for out-of-town meets, and other duties as assigned
- Model, demonstrate and foster enthusiasm and integrity for teamwork and a positive team atmosphere
- Take the lead on day-to-day training programs and operations during the absences of the head coach
- Ability to travel to out-of-town meets and support Head Coach on deck

Salary and Start Date
- Hourly pay. Approximately 10-18 hours/week during our 37 week swim season September-June
- Cross-training with current coaches for remainder of current swim season (May/June), with commitment to assistant coach in 2023-24 season and beyond (September-June).
- Available for some, or all, of swim practices 6am to 7:30am Tuesday-Friday, 4pm to 5:45pm Monday to Friday, and Saturday 7:30am to 9am.
- Available to travel to out-of-town swim meets approximately 1 weekend per month during swim season
- Commit to Safe Sport Initiative upon hire
- Provide references on request


Required Skills:
Qualifications and Skills
- Experience in athlete development from early competitive to provincial levels
- Strong swimming background preferred but not a requirement
- Excellent verbal and written communication and organization skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Valid Canadian G driver's license
- Pass a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check (Ages 18 & Older)
- Proficiency with Google Suite or other productivity tools such as MS office

Assets
- Previous coaching experience
- Current NCCP certification Level 1+ preferred, however, commitment to pursue certification upon hire is acceptable. Online course fees will be covered by SSAT.
