Who We Are
The Ojibways of Batchewana First Nation (BFN) are a progressive and vibrant Indigenous community situated on the northeastern shore of Lake Superior adjacent to the City of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. The First Nation Is comprised of four land bases:
Rankin, Goulais Bay, Obadjiwon, and Whitefish Island.

Batchewana First Nation has the charm of small-town life with access to urban areas and proximity to the international bridge. As part of the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians and signatories to the Robinson Huron Treaty, Batchewana First Nation assert their sovereignty, jurisdiction, and expressions of nationhood through a multitude of approaches each and everyday.

Summary of Position
The Community Wellness Counsellor (CWC) provides individual and group counselling to Batchewana First Nation (BFN) membership and community. The CWC will work with the Mental Wellness Team to alleviate trauma and its effects on individuals, families and community. Must have strong understanding of complex mental health, concurrent disorders, substance use, and expert knowledge of counselling modalities.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide therapeutic counselling services to individuals and groups utilizing evidence-based counselling modalities
- Assist in the development of mental health, addiction, and trauma counselling programs with the Community Wellness Clinician, Community Wellness Manager, and other Community Wellness staff, identifying needs of community members, and gaps in treatment and services
- Provide therapeutic support to clients experiencing loss, grief and bereavement, anxiety and depression and other cognitive, behavioral or emotional disturbances as deemed appropriate by relevant legislation and individual competency
- Develop individual care plans with client directed goals
- Maintain strong commitment to ongoing professional development as required by the regulating college
- Ensures strict confidentiality guidelines regarding all clients, conversations and referrals
- Prepares and submits annual work plans

Required Skills:
Qualifications & Experience
- Masters in Social Work, Counselling or related field or a BSW with 3-5 years of counselling experience. Masters preferred.
- Registered Social Worker in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSW), College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), or Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA).
Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Detailed and up to date knowledge of counselling theories, practices, and techniques for mental health and addiction
- Excellent planning, organization, time management, problem solving and decision-making skills
- Extensive knowledge of short-screeners, assessments and other standardized tools
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external programs and agencies
- Excellent administrative abilities including case and progress noting, treatments plans and general report writing
- Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
- Knowledge of community resources treatment centres, social service networks and organizations
- Experience in working with First Nations individuals, families, and communities
- Knowledge of the Batchewana First Nation Health and other BFN First Nation departments programs and services
- Effectively communicate both written and orally; ability to understand and speak Anishinaabemowin is an asset
- Knowledge of de-escalation techniques, problem solving skills; solid understanding of trauma- informed practice approaches and crisis response strategies
