LOCATION: 122 East St. - Sault Ste. Marie, ON
POSITION STATUS: Full-Time, Mat-Leave Contract (8-Months. with possible extension)
CURRENT HOURS OF WORK: 40 Hours/Week

At The Indigenous Friendship Centre. we are passionate about the cause and the people we serve in our community through various programs and services offered.
Apatisiwin Employment Counsellor is one of the key forces behind both, and we are currently seeking an experienced individual who has previously developed career plans and is knowledgeable in working with vulnerable populations. The qualified candidate must be able to breakdown career barriers and help individuals over the age of 30 assist with finding meaningful employment, This person must be able to work as part of a team to provide skills to help find employment and assess clients' interests, skills, abilities and work readiness while providing skill development to clients in areas related to obtaining and retaining employment by building relationships within the community with colleges and universities, private training institutes and businesses across the province. The Apatisiwin Employment Counsellor, will work to support the Sault Ste. Marie Indigenous Friendship Centre as a whole, but also primarily work alongside the Youth Apatisiwin Employment Counsellor to support Urban Indigenous clients who are not eligible through First Nation. Inuit, or Metis agreements,
PROGRAM SUMMARY:
The purpose of the Apatisiwin program is to offer employment and training interventions and other activities designed to improve education and employment outcomes for Urban Indigenous people residing in the community, The program seeks to deliver services to eligible direct-service users by assessing their needs and supporting their development of an action plan to address identified employment barriers.
Indigenous people who possess the qualifications, competence, professional capabilities, previous work experience and ability and willingness to meet the defined needs, goals and policies of the IFCSSM will be given first preference.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interview clients to obtain employment history, educational background and career goals
Create intake and release of information forms
Identify barriers to work and help clients with matters such as job readiness skills, job search strategies, writing cover letters and resumes, and preparing for job interviews
Give and interpret tests designed to determined the interests, aptitudes and abilities of clients
Assess need for assistance such as rehabilitation, financial aid or further vocational training and refer clients to appropriate services
Provide established working information on maintaining a job or moving within an organization, dealing with job dissatisfaction or making a mid-career change
Collect labour market information for clients regarding job openings, entry and skill requirements and other occupation information
Provide consulting services to community groups and agencies , bus iness and industry and other organizations that offer community-based career planning resources Research funding opportunities
Maintatn accurate files, case records and statistical data as required for quarterly reporting purposes

Required Skills:
EDUCATION. TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:
University degree or college diploma and/or equivalent training experience/certification in the area of training, development and employment services
Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous Skills and Employment Training Strategy (ISETS) and current trends in local labour market
Understanding of Indigenous history and culture is key in this role
Crisis Intervention certification or counselling training preferred
Minimum of two years work experience in a similar or related position Or the equivalent combination of education and experience
KNOWLEDGE. SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Ability to develop intervention contracts, funding submissions and related documents
Excellent finance skills and attention to detail: accounting experience is considered an asset
Ability to engage, build trust and rapport; effective verbal and listening communication skills
Must have experience in planning, coordinating and implementing learning pathways and interventions Excellent public relation skills and thorough knowledge of community resources
Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage and increase awareness of services through partnerships
Group facilitation, team building and decision-making skills;
Well-developed problem-solving, prioritization and conflict resolution skills with the ability to meet deadlines
Excellent case and file management skills, stress management and time management skills
Ability to maintain databases and produce rudimentary reports
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, virtual conferencing, and database experience
REQUIREMENTS;
Proof of valid Covid-19 Vaccination (Dose 1 & Dose 2)
Current and valid Vulnerable Sector Check, as per the Criminal Record Review Act
Must possess a valid Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle
Must provide a clear Driver's Abstract
Must have or is willing to obtain First Aid/CPR Training Certification
Ability/willinsness to travel and to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends for client-based programs and services
