Job Description:
POSITION OVERVIEW
An Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) who is also a Registered Nurse (RN) plays a vital role in promoting the health and well-being of workers and plays an essential expert role in emergency response. The OHN/RN responsibilities typically focus on preventing work-related injuries and illnesses, providing care for employees, and supporting the overall health and safety goals of an organization. As a highly skilled and experienced Registered Nurse in a remote work site location, advanced clinical skills in emergency care, injury management, and emergency response planning and coordination are required.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Accountabilities and duties will include but not limited to the following:
1. Health and Safety Assessments
-Review workplace health and safety assessments to identify potential health hazards.
-Collaborate with employers and safety teams to implement workplace health promotion and injury prevention programs.
-Monitor and evaluate the physical work environment, such as ergonomics, noise levels, chemical exposure, and ventilation systems, to reduce health risks.
2. Workplace Injury and Illness Management
-Provide first aid and emergency care for work-related injuries and illnesses.
-Manage the treatment and recovery of employees who are injured on the job, including coordinating with physicians and other medical professionals.
-Administer and document employee health services, such as vaccinations, blood pressure checks, and injury treatments.
-Track workers' compensation claims and assist in the return-to-work process, including monitoring rehabilitation and ensuring that employees are fit for duty.
3. Health Promotion and Education
-Promote healthy lifestyle choices by providing education on nutrition, exercise, stress management, and other health-related topics.
-Design and implement wellness programs, including smoking cessation, fitness challenges, or weight management initiatives.
-Coordinate on-site health initiatives with other extended health care providers including optometrists, chiropractors, massage therapists, physiotherapists, and other providers.
-Educate employees on the prevention of common occupational health issues such as musculoskeletal disorders, respiratory conditions, and exposure to harmful chemicals.
4. Health Surveillance and Monitoring
-Conduct on site Drug & Alcohol Testing for all Wesdome and contractor employees, in accordance with the Fitness for Duty Policy
-Conduct routine health screenings for employees, including nurse medicals and fitness exams, vision tests, hearing tests/audiometry, respiratory assessments/spirometry, and substance abuse screening.
-Monitor and track employees' health data to identify trends or potential health risks, such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, or chronic conditions.
-Keep records of all health surveillance activities and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory health and safety requirements.
5. Compliance and Regulatory Oversight
-Ensure the workplace complies with local, provincial, and federal regulations related to employee health and safety, including OH&S Act & Regulations and CSA Standards.
-Stay up to date with changes in health and safety regulations and advise employers on necessary adjustments to workplace practices or policies.
-Conduct safety audits and ensure that workplace safety equipment and PPE (personal protective equipment) are available and in good working order.
-Conduct inventory audits of AED's, oxygen, medication and immunizations to meet regulatory requirements including OH&S Act & Regulations, Algoma Public Health Standards, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, and other regulatory requirements
6. Case Management
-Manage the care of employees with chronic health conditions or those recovering from occupational and non-occupational injuries.
-Assist in developing and monitoring individualized return-to-work plans for injured or ill employees.
-Coordinate with medical director physician, emergency and family physicians, physical therapists, and other healthcare providers to support employees' recovery and rehabilitation.
7. Emergency Preparedness and Response
-Develop and implement emergency medical response plans in collaboration with the Emergency Response Coordinator for workplace accidents, natural disasters, or other emergencies.
-Train employees on basic first aid, CPR, and emergency procedures.
-Ensure that the workplace is equipped with necessary medical supplies and that emergency medical plans are regularly reviewed and practiced.
-Provide advanced life supportive care for injured or ill workers in a remote camp location until emergency medical services via land ambulance or ORNGE rotor wing transportation is available
-Available 24/7 for on-call emergency medical response for remote camp workers.
8. Recordkeeping and Reporting
-Maintain accurate, confidential health records for employees in accordance with legal requirements.
-Compile and report data on workplace injuries, illnesses, and health trends to senior management and regulatory bodies.
-Prepare and submit reports on health surveillance findings, risk assessments, and other relevant health data.
9. Collaboration and Consultation
-Work closely with human resources, safety officers, and management to create and maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
-Provide consultation on occupational health policies and procedures.
-Offer guidance and advice on managing work-related health issues, such as stress, fatigue, or exposure to hazardous substances.
10. Mental Health Support
-Promote mental health awareness in the workplace and support programs for stress management, coping with work-related trauma, and maintaining mental well-being.
-Identify employees who may need additional psychological support and provide resources or referrals to mental health professionals
11. Inventory and Stocking
-Conduct regular inventory checks of medical supplies and equipment in the medical mobile unit and first aid rooms
-Maintain a detailed inventory log of all supplies, including expiration dates, lot numbers and quantities
-Ensure the Medical Mobile Unit, First Aid rooms, and emergency grab bags are fully stocked with the necessary medical supplies and are in good working condition
-Prepare emergency grab bags and supply kits, ensuring they are readily accessible
-Ensure secure storage of medications and vaccines in compliance with regulations, including temperature control for sensitive medications (vaccines, insulin, CyanoKit)
-Order medical supplies through authorized suppliers and ensure timely restocking to prevent shortages or interruptions in care

WORKING CONDITIONS
-Remote mine site location (90 km from Wawa Ontario, Lady Dunn Hospital).
-7 shifts on, 7 shifts off rotation.
-12 hours shifts (5am - 5pm).
-Travel required based on training needs.
-24/7 on-call emergency medical response.
-Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
-The physical requirements of this position include reading, walking, standing, sitting, reaching, kneeling, repetitive motions, stooping, balancing, pushing, pulling and ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Required Skills:
-Bachelor Degree in Nursing
-Occupational Health Nursing Certificate
-ACLS, TNCC, BLS(C) Certification
-Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certification
-First Aid and CPR Instructor Certification
-Strong knowledge of workplace safety regulations and public health standards.
-Advanced clinical skills in emergency care, triage, and injury management.
-Good communication skills for providing education and collaborating with different stakeholders in the organization.
-Strong analytical skills to assess workplace health risks and recommend interventions.
-Valid G drivers license in good standing;
-Bilingual (verbal and written communication skills) in English and French is an asset.
