Position: Early Childhood Educator - 2 positions Starting Range: $22.34 - $24.63 (Pending Education & Experience)
Full-time Contracts
Location: Education Unit
Report to: Elementary Lead Teacher / Education Manager
Position Summary
The Early Childhood Educator, Education Unit is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating developmentally appropriate activities and experiences in accordance with the Education Units philosophy; providing care and education for young children in a group setting under the direction of the Manager, Education. The Early Childhood Educator, Education Unit functions within legislative requirements, regulations, policies and procedures and the Mission, Beliefs and Vision of the Garden River First Nation, and contributes to the accomplishment of the strategic priorities.
Duties
- Work in collaboration with the teacher to provide a high quality, play-based developmentally appropriate program that reflects the Early Learning Program;
- Support the consistent delivery of programs that are based on current research and best practice;
- Assist in the development and implementation of daily activities for children;
- Support in providing a welcoming, safe, nurturing, inclusive, positive and respectful environment that recognizes individual differences in children;
- Assist in supporting children with opportunities based on individual strengths and needs;
- Perform other similar duties as assigned by the Principal or designated personnel.
- Providing a balance of active, quiet, indoor, outdoor, individual/group activities
- Carrying out the daily program schedule incorporating activities and routines
- Organizing space, equipment and materials prior to planned activities
- Planning and presenting activities incorporating our culture, language and values
- Using a variety of teaching techniques including modeling, observing, questioning, demonstrating and reinforcing
- Assisting children in expressing themselves by actively listening and responding with questions and comments that extend and encourage conversations; Encouraging and assisting children to practice self-help skills daily
- Planning and carrying out activities that encourage problem solving
- Providing opportunities for child-directed play experiences for children to choose to be alone
- Participating in short and long term planning and program evaluation
- Discussing and seeking approval from the Program Supervisor for any changes in the daily schedule and duly noting in the daily log after discussing with Program Supervisor
- According to the position description (copy available upon request:
o Using the Four Foundations of How Does Learning Happen
o Ensuring the child's environment is healthy and safe; Ensuring positive communication with parents
o Appropriate Playroom Conduct; Complying With Dress Code; Contributing to ongoing operation of the Centre
- Perform other related duties that may be required and assigned.

- Required Early Childhood Education diploma or equivalent as approved through the provincial licensing process
- Must be licensed with the College of ECE and in good standing
- Required six months experience is preferred; Related skills: , IS, CPR, First Aid and Knowledge of legislation
- Ability to research, plan and implement well-organized activities/programs
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and knowledge to the First Nation cultural values and traditions
- Ability to use good judgment - assessing difficult situations; Being consistent and display a positive/helpful attitude
- Flexibility required to keep pace with an ever-changing environment; Stamina, sensitivity and strong negotiation and advocacy skills; Willingness to accept changes in work practices and technology
- Ability to work under pressure; meet deadlines; Work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team
- Excellent organizational & time management skills, interpersonal and communications skills, both oral and written
- Excellent computer skills (including MS Word, Word Perfect, Excel, Internet, Email, Outlook)
- Ability to report for work as scheduled
- Ability to attend at work regularly
- Must undergo a criminal record and vulnerable sector check prior to employment (At Applicant Expense)
