Position Title Shelter Worker
Classification D
Reports To Program Supervisor
Location Sault Ste. Marie, ON
Position Status Part-Time, Casual Permanent
Salary $26.44 - $32.79/hour, per Local 684 Collective Agreement

PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Shelter Worker provides emergency shelter services to the community of people in need of shelter in a 24/7- hour environment (shift work). The position is responsible for maintaining the overall operation of shelter facilities and providing documents and statistics as required. Responsibilities of the Shelter Worker include but are not limited to; determining the individuals need for shelter, providing basic needs, support coordination and crisis
support, providing support and/or storage for resident medication, and providing any additional programming, support, services, or supplies. The Shelter Worker carries out these responsibilities in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of CMHA, relevant legislation and regulations and organizational policies, to promote the delivery of efficient and high-quality services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Service Engagement, Assessment, Education, Goal Planning, Administration, Shelter Maintenance, Community Relations/Advocacy, General Organizational Responsibilities
- Implement the low barrier shelter model by providing the most vulnerable members of the community with a safe and secure place to stay
- Providing 24/7 meaningful support for high acuity individuals, including:
- Implementation of discharge plans from partner agencies
- Mental health and first aid support
- Overdose response (First Aid/CPR, Naloxone administration)
- Providing crisis support and/or referral as required

Required Skills:
Education, Certification & Experience
- Minimum two-Year diploma in a Human Services related field
- Current registration with OCSWSSW or a regulated body under the Regulated Health Professions Act, if eligible
- Mandatory certification in ASIST, and First Aid/CPR and Safe Food Handling (or willing to obtain on own within 3 months)
- Minimum one-year experience in the fields of mental health and addictions. Experience in housing services preferred.

- Ability to work in partnership with clients
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of the mental health and addictions services
- Extensive knowledge of standardized screening and assessment tools
- Extensive knowledge of community services, supports and resources
- Ability to apply Recovery principles and empowerment-orientated philosophies and practices in work with clients
- Ability to recognize and diffuse potential conflict situations
- Demonstrated ability to observe boundaries, engage in appropriate emotional regulation, refrain from dual relationship with guests/clients
- Ability to demonstrate diplomacy and negotiation skills in client and system advocacy
- Ability to make sound clinical judgments and to effectively communicate that to others
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain sound relationships within and outside CMHA
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability and flexibility to work independently on a range of tasks within specified time frames and deadlines and to work as part of a team
- Excellent computer skills and competency in software applications used by the agency
- Demonstrated ability to engage in reasonable self-care strategies that incorporate balancing work/life responsibilities
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills
Requirements:
- Acceptable Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check upon hire; to be maintained throughout employment
- Ability to provide effective client services in English and French, is preferred
- Requires heavy lifting, reaching, repetitive and bending
- Ability to move, ascend, descend and position self from floor and back up for prolong periods
