Job Description:
PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
The purpose of the Aboriginal Student Support Worker is to provide Thessalon First Nation students with support by reviewing individual education plans, assisting students to enhance learning skills, provide support for student and families to plan an educational pathway for students to find success within the school and Thessalon First Nation community.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist Thessalon First Nation students, parents and community members to understand school protocols, rules and policies as required;
- Engage parental involvement for student success;
- Report writing, tracking system for students, team work, professional development etc.;
- Liaison with teachers and assist parents and students to build on attendance programs, alternative programming, and academic counselling. Advocate on behalf of students and parents;
- Provide the afterschool tutor program for elementary and secondary students;
- Work with students to develop appropriate self advocacy skills;
- Support parents in the IEP and IPRC process at the Thessalon Public School, Central Algoma Intermediate School, and Central Algoma Secondary School;
- Review all student profiles to support appropriate programming;
- Tie traditional teachings to the academic and behavioral expectations required in school and as life skills for students;
- Assist students with improvement of cross-cultural communication skills improving interpersonal and social skills;
- Create and facilitate opportunities for students to develop and practice team building and leadership skills;
- Build on academic success for students within the schools;
- Work in a multi team environment promoting a positive working relationship between parents, teachers, and Principals;
- Assist students with improved communication skills at the school and in their personal relationships by providing positive life skills, coping strategies thus allowing students the ability to express themselves with ease in situations;
- Assist students with the opportunity to develop an understanding regarding their Anishinaabe Cultural identity by providing cultural relevant activities; talking circles, drum making and sweats; and
- Other related duties as required an/or assigned.

Required Skills:
- Post-Secondary Education in Social Work, Education, Child and Family or Youth worker;
- Minimum of 2 years' experience related to counselling youth or cross-cultural programming;
- Experience and knowledge regarding traditional Ojibway teachings, Native history and understanding of traditional medicines and ceremonies;
- CPR and First Aid certification;
- Ability to work flexible hours;
- Serve as a positive role model for youth and community;
- Must have valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle;
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills;
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office word, excel, outlook, zoom, etc.; and
- Provide criminal records check.
- Minimum of 2 years' experience related to counselling youth or cross-cultural programming;
