Sault Surge Aquatic Team (SSAT)
Job Location: John Rhodes Community Centre
Pay Rate / Hour: $17.50-20
Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario
Position: Junior Coaches (4-10 hrs/week)
Sault Surge Aquatic Team (SSAT) is a non-profit, competitive club in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. SSAT provides professional swim instruction, training and coaching for competitive swimmers from ages 7 to 17 and beyond. The operations of the Club are overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors elected annually by the membership and is governed according to the Club's by-laws.
SSAT is fortunate to have access to city run pool facilities. The club has a strong membership base from Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding areas of approximately 80-100 swimmers. Our mission is to promote the sport of competitive and developmental swimming in our community and deliver quality swim programming to all of our members. SSAT is looking for a part-time Assistant Coach with a start date in May 2023 to train with current coaching staff for the remainder of the 2022-23 season, and take on a leadership role in our intermediate & senior swimmers in the 2023-24 season and beyond. SSAT is also looking for Junior Coach candidates to support our introductory swim programs with a potential pathway to develop into an Assistant Coach.
The Sault Surge relies on a group of enthusiastic individuals with passion for sport to be Junior Coaches to coach our younger swimmers and potentially follow a development pathway into an Assistant Coach position. The Junior Coaches are responsible for following training programs and methods implemented by the Head Coach to inspire young swimmers (generally age 7-12) to grow into competitive swimmers in a fun and challenging way.
Primary Duties
- Support the swimming and training programs implemented by the Head Coach for competitive and novice swimmers in a safe and positive environment
- Engage with a team of assistant and development coaches in a positive professional way to establish a cohesive team and enjoyable season
- Independently instruct proper swimming techniques, and facilitate beginner development swim skills in a positive manner
- Regular communication with swimmers including end of season progress reports
- Coach a learn to swim novice program which aligns with the competitive swim program
- Commitment to undertake professional self-development to advance coaching knowledge
- Model, demonstrate and foster enthusiasm and integrity for teamwork and a positive team atmosphere
Salary and Start Date
- Hourly rate. Approximately 4-10 hours/week during our 37 week swim season September-June
- Start date flexible

- Experience in athlete development from pre-competitive to competitive
- Strong swimming background preferred but not a requirement
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Pass a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check (Ages 18 & Older)

- Commitment to achieve NCCP certification Level 1 upon hire. Online course fees will be covered by SSAT.

- Available for some, or all, of swim practices 4pm to 5:45pm Monday to Friday, and occasionally Saturday 7:30am to 9am.
