Position: Tenant Relations Officer
Starting Range: $24.57 - $27.09 (Pending Education & Experience)
Location: Administration Building
Report to: Housing Manager
POSITION SUMMARY
Tenant Relations Officer (TRO) will assist the Garden River Housing Department in providing Garden River First Nation Citizens with safe and affordable housing. The TRO is responsible for establishing and maintaining positive relations with tenants occupying units owned by Garden River First Nation Housing Department (GRFNHD) through liaison, counseling and communication with current and prospective tenants on home related matters. The TRO will also ensure the Housing Policies and Procedures and Tenancy agreements are adhered to, which will maximize the recovery of outstanding tenant debt pertaining to Section 95. The TRO functions within legislative requirements, regulations, policies and procedures and the Mission, Beliefs and Vision of the Garden River First Nation, and contributes to the accomplishment of the strategic priorities
DUTIES
- Explaining the eligibility and applications process with potential tenants;
- Entering all applications for housing into the housing software
- Upon units being allocated, preparing and managing Rental agreements and Rent to Own agreements inclusive of:
- Responding to tenant requests and problems in a timely and courteous manner, forwarding issues to appropriate staff
- Communicating with tenants to relay information such as home maintenance, repairs, workshops, arrears, late notices, breaches etc.
- Monitoring and taking appropriate action with respect to breaches in agreements per policy
- Tracking complaints and preparing notices to be sent to tenants with regard to noise, abandonment of property, late payment, etc.
- Establishing new and maintaining current tenant files, records of all communication and correspondence
- Efficiently tracks all repayment agreements and arrears and reports to Housing Manager monthly
- Counsels current and prospective tenants with respect to Financial budgeting; arranges workshops, meetings and begins positive relationship for successful tenancy/homeownership
- Creates tenant file summary when required for presentation to tenant, Housing Manager, Housing Team, and Housing Portfolio holders
- Continuously ensures that tenants are educated through workshops with housing related matters and through the development of the Housing Newsletter
- Monitor, assess and maintain collection portfolio minimizing the band's financial loss
- Negotiates on a case-by-case basis, a repayment schedule directly with the tenant by quickly assessing the file detail, the band's legal alternatives and the tenant's ability to repay
- Providing report to Housing Department Manager as per the department's overall collection status
- Performing other related duties as may be required and assigned

Required Skills:
- Required 1-Year College Diploma in a related field;
- Required 2 year related experience;
- Strong negotiation skills; organizational and planning skills, Ability to multi-task;
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and knowledge to the First Nation cultural values and traditions;
- Ability to use good judgment in assessing difficult situations;
- Ability to be consistent and display a positive/helpful attitude;
- Flexibility required to keep pace with an ever-changing environment;
- Stamina, sensitivity and strong negotiation and advocacy skills;
- Willingness to accept changes in work practices and technology;
- Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines;
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team;
- Excellent organizational skills, time management skills, interpersonal and communications skills, both oral and written;
- Excellent computer skills (including MS Word, Excel, Internet, Email, Outlook) and data base development and use;
- Ability to report for work as scheduled;

- Must undergo a criminal record check with vulnerable sector prior to employment.
