Job Description:
Position Summary:
Under the direction and supervision of the Education Director, the Special Education Support person is responsible for setting up educational assessments, acting as a liaison between parents and service providers as well as seeking a variety of funding opportunities. The Special
Education Support person also will act as a liaison between the Serpent River Education Department and local schools.
Position Duties
- Create case files on each Spec Ed. student including copies of assessments, payment details, applicable paperwork including but not limited to documentation from partnering schools and school boards, Jordan's principle applications, letters of support
- Accessing service from different agencies (I.E. speech and language, occupation therapy, physiotherapy)
- Facilitate access to assessments
- Advocate for parents and children within partnering agencies
- Accessing funds through Jordan's Principle and other funding sources.
- When appropriate attend transition meetings with Spec Education needs when transitioning from different levels of education ie but not limited to elementary to secondary secondary, secondary to post-secondary as well as secondary to workplace
- Helping parents understand the IPRC identification(placement review committee process)
- Ongoing review of individual education plans(IEP), in partnership with schools and caregivers
- Knowledge of culturally appropriate pedagogy
- Knowledge of barriers in education system that Indigenous families may face
- Data collection for reporting purposes

Required Skills:
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in education or social services or related field
- Equivalent experience
- Experience working with vulnerable populations
- Knowledge of Special Education practices within local school boards
- Knowledge of the 7 grandfather teachings
- Provide proof of COVID vaccination (2 doses)
- Knowledge of First Nations education systems
